Everything about January Birthstone

The origin of the birthstone can date from thousands of years to the time of Moses. And in those days were believed to possess some magical force that could protect the owner or wearer of the stone. These birthstones were traditionally linked to the Zodiac. However, modern birthstones are linked to calendar months, and each month has its own unique birthstone, with its own fabled properties. Many people love to wear jewelry set with their birthstone. People birth in different month wear different stones. So, these stones are called birthstones.

The January birthstone is garnet, a deep red stone that pairs especially well with sterling silver jewelry. Garnet jewelry makes a great gift for anyone with a January birthday. Garnets are found in every color except blue, including brilliant green tsavorite garnet, raspberry pink rhodolite garnet, and orange malaya garnet. Bright red "anthill" garnets are found in Arizona. The Tsars of Russia favored rare green damantoid garnets.

The garnet at its best is a deep, rich red or purple-red although they come in practically every color except blue. They range from pale orange to dark red and violet. Because of the feature of garnet, garnet stones are mistaken for other precious stones like rubies or emeralds but in fact they are often much more durable and sometimes less expensive. Traditionally, garnet was associated with faith, love and constancy and so was one of the more temperate stones. It was also believed that wearing garnet could calm anxiety and could keep you safe whilst travelling. A pretty and protecting little gem

Not only was the garnet regarded as the gem of faith, constancy, and truth, but it was believed also to possess many curative powers. Once, it was ground into a powder and used as a poultice, for red garnet was said to relieve fever, and yellow garnet was the prescription for jaundice.

The most expensive garnet is the brilliant green variety called demantoid (diamond like), which approaches emerald shade and exceeds the diamond in fire or dispersion. The finest of these garnets, which are quite rare, are found in the Ural Mountain

There are many different kinds of garnet stones in the market, like necklaces, rings, earrings etc. When purchasing Garnet as your birthstones, make sure you purchase the genuine natural mineral. Too often we see man-made simulants that are being offered as Garnets, even though they are colored cubic zirconia or similar stones.
